News - 2011/2012

The State Relay Championships were held on Saturday 28^th Jan at the new home of Athletics .... Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park.  Conditions all day long were muggy and oppressive with temperatures in the mid 30's making it very difficult for some of our athletes with up to 5 races to contest.  The day started with a bang with the u12 mixed 4 x 200's taking gold in the 4th event of the morning.  By the end of the day (with everyone including the parents prety worn off their feet), we had amassed a total of 2 GOLD, 2 SILVER & 1 BRONZE medal.  Of the 25 teams proudly wearing the Waverley chequers, another 6 teams made the finals (making 11/25 in the top 8) which was an awesome effort !  Their placings were 3 x 4th, 6th, 7th & 8th.  Unfortunately, due to the unfortunate "timing" of the staging of this event, we had to "withdraw" 3 teams due to injury and availability issues, so we are hopeful that LAVic will revert back to the original timing of Nov & Dec for relays for the coming seasons ?? !!!

Thanks to a brilliant job from our Team Managers Nicole McDonnell and Joanne Paola for their pre-event organisation and support and encouragement on the day.  Once again, all our parents stepped up and helped provide our young athletes with the support they needed to perform out on the track.  A big thank you to you all for completing the allocated duties on time and without any fuss.

Special mentions to Dylan Cooper, Nicole & Steve Lopes and Tammy Stephens for their roles as “State Key Officials” (these roles account for a portion of our duty requirements on the day and their commitment is greatly appreciated).

Thanks to our Coaches for all their efforts not only in preparing our athletes but all the other behind the scenes tasks that are required to organise and co-ordinate with the lead up events at Mentone & Regions.  Steve Box with heaps of u9 teams and lots of patience, Nicole McDonnell, Jenny Morley & Louise/Steve Pewtress (u10s), Andrew Rennie (u11s), Lindsay Harrison (u12s) and Fiona Squires (u13 & up).

And lastly our athletes, every single athlete was awesome for their efforts on the track regardless of where they finished and proudly represented Waverley with their efforts and behaviour.  A Great Team Effort by all !!!
